3DOF or 5DOF: when it’s worth stepping up a level
FROM THE raceBOX
At the Lab we have both types of simulator. And sooner or later, the question comes up: “What’s the difference? Is it really worth choosing the 5DOF?”
The answer depends on what you’re looking for. But to answer properly, you first need to understand what those numbers mean.
3DOF... 5DOF... but what do they mean?

DOF stands for Degrees of Freedom. It indicates how many axes of movement the platform can replicate simultaneously. The more degrees of freedom, the more the body perceives a complete range of forces similar to those felt in a real car.
A 3DOF simulator replicates roll, pitch and yaw, the three fundamental movements. It’s already a huge leap compared to a fixed setup: the body starts receiving real information about what the car is doing.
A 5DOF simulator adds two further degrees, getting closer to a complete perception of the forces in acceleration, braking and cornering. The difference can be felt physically, right from the first few minutes of a session.
Who should choose the 3DOF
The 3DOF is the ideal starting point for those approaching simulation for the first time, for those who want to work on the racing line and driving technique, and for those looking for a high-level experience without the physical complexity of the 5DOF.
It’s also the right choice for longer sessions where the priority is repetition and building method, rather than maximum physical fidelity.
Who should choose the 5DOF
The 5DOF is the right tool when you want to get as close as possible to the perception of real driving. For a driver preparing to get into a car, the 5DOF adds a layer of physical information that the 3DOF cannot provide.
It’s also the ideal choice for those working on how they manage their body in the car: posture, resistance to cornering forces, physical reaction to the car’s inputs.

The right choice isn’t always the most advanced one
One of the most common mistakes is thinking that the 5DOF is always better, but that’s not the case. For certain training goals the 3DOF is more effective, because it reduces variables and allows you to focus on one specific element at a time.
At the Lab we help you choose the right simulator for what you’re looking for.
