Professional driving simulator: what really sets it apart from everything else
FROM THE raceBOX
There's a question that comes up often, even before someone walks into the Lab for the first time. "But is it really that different from what you find out there?"
Yes. And it's a difference you can feel, literally.
It's not a matter of graphics
When it comes to a professional driving simulator, the first instinct is to look at the three screens. Resolution, detail, frame smoothness. But graphics are only one of the things that set a professional simulator apart from everything else.
What really changes is what the body perceives.
At the Lab we have two types of simulators: 3DOF and 5DOF. Both are fitted with motion platforms that replicate in real time the forces a driver feels in the car: pitch, roll and yaw. The 5DOF adds further degrees of freedom, getting even closer to the physical perception of real driving.
The steering wheel
Another element that clearly separates a professional driving simulator from a generic setup is the force feedback of the steering wheel.
At the Lab we use steering wheels with professional force feedback, with peaks of 21 N/m for the 3DOF and 29 N/m for the 5DOF, which accurately return the forces running through the steering in every condition: understeer, oversteer, changes in grip, kerbs.
Driving with a professional steering wheel completely changes the way you read the car, without limiting driving to the eyes alone, but extending it to the hands, exactly as on track.
The simulator replicates damage

This means that a contact, a off-track excursion or a lock-up has real consequences on the performance of the session, exactly as it would on track.
It's one of the most effective tools for building awareness and respect for the vehicle. Those who know that every mistake has a cost learn to drive differently, more carefully and more precisely.
This means that to make the most of the possibilities the simulator offers, you need to have method, and behave as if you were actually inside the car.
The pedals
Another fundamental point of our setups, the hydraulic pedal set delivers the feel of a racing pedal, thanks to the load cell that supports up to 250 kg, as well as the vibration caused by the ABS kicking in.
The throttle has an extended travel, giving the driver the ability to modulate the amount of power delivered.
The clutch, which is used during simulations with cars that specifically require it, is snappy and allows a quick, clean gear change, as does the H-pattern gearbox.
What all this means for those who train
The difference between a professional simulator and everything else is not only technical, but also methodological. A generic setup lets you have fun, and there's nothing wrong with that, while a professional driving simulator lets you truly improve, transferring sensations, habits and awareness directly to real driving.
This is why more and more drivers, at every level, choose to integrate simulation into their training path.
