The phrases we hear most often during a simulation session

Updated: Jul 1

FROM THE raceBOX

Inside the Lab there are no right or wrong questions. After years of activity we've come to realise that certain questions always come back.

Some more technical, some less. But all of them say something about the person asking.

Because those walking into a simulation centre for the first time don't always know what to expect. And the questions they ask, often without realising it, already say a lot about how they'll approach their first simulation session — and the ones that follow.

The first day

"Is it like the video games?"

Depends what you mean. If you mean you can crash and restart without the car or your body feeling anything — no, not quite. The body perceives far more than you'd expect. The simulator replicates damage, returns real forces, and tests your concentration in exactly the same way a real track would. Many discover this on their very first lap. Some prefer not to admit it.

"How long does it take to go fast?"

Depends how willing you are to go slow at the beginning. The fastest progress is always made by those who build steadily, corner by corner, without chasing lap times before they've understood the line. It's not a rule. It's what we see happen every single day.

Those who arrive with their minds already made up

"I already have experience, can I skip the basics?"

You can. But the drivers with the most real-world experience are often the first ones who want to understand every detail. They know how much it matters to start from the right place. Real experience teaches humility. Assumed experience, a little less so.

"Do I really need to train? I thought driving was enough…"

Driving and training are not the same thing. You can cover a thousand kilometres without improving by a tenth, if you don't know what you're doing. One simulation session with a clear goal is worth ten aimless ones.

"If I'm fast on track, I should already be good on the simulator, right?"

Sometimes yes. Often no. The simulator strips away the shortcuts. What's left is driving, pure and simple.

The most human ones

"Do you think I could do karting at 40?"

Yes. And you'd probably surprise yourself. Age changes some things, but it doesn't change the ability to read a line. If the question is "where do I start" — you're already in the right place.

"My son is fast, but how do I know if he's really good?"

Speed is only part of the picture. What we look at is something else entirely: how he reacts to mistakes, how he listens, how he behaves when things aren't going his way. Talent shows itself quickly. Character is something we can build.

"I've never driven anything, am I too far behind?"

No. Those who arrive without habits to correct sometimes learn faster than those who first need to unlearn what they already knew. Every simulation session is a starting point, not an exam.

We've heard some of these phrases thousands of times. But behind each one, there's always the same thing: someone wanting to know if there's room for them. And the answer, almost always, is yes.
